1. Vacation (American)

Vacation ist Amerikanisches Englisch und bedeutet Urlaub, häufig im Sinne von Urlaub machen und verreisen.

• to be on vacation: I'm on vacation.
• to spend a vacation: Where will you spend your vacation?
• to go on vacation: Are you going on vacation this year?

2. Holiday (British)

Holiday ist die britische Version für vacation. Häufig wird Holiday dabei im Plural verwendet: Holidays.

• to be on holiday: I'm on holiday.
• to spend your holidays: Where will you spend your holidays? 
• to go on holiday: Are you going on holiday this year?

3. Holiday = Feiertag

Vor allem auf American English verwenden wir das Wort Holiday als 1:1 Übersetzung für Feiertag.

• Austria has many catholic holidays.
• I'll be off work on Friday because it's a holiday.
• Happy holidays! (before Christmas)

4. Ferien auf Englisch?

Ferien kann man wie folgt übersetzen:

• vacation oder holidays (siehe oben) - auf Englisch ist die Unterscheidung zwischen Urlaub und Ferien nicht so streng wie auf Deutsch.
• break: spring break, fall break, summer break (American English, bezieht sich konkret auf das Schulsystem)
• to be off: Kids are off for the summer. They have the summer off.

Fazit

• Für Urlaub können Sie holiday(s) als auch vacation verwenden. Selbst viele Native Speakers sind bei dieser Unterscheidung zwischen British/American nicht ganz strikt.
• Wählen Sie gezielt eine Variante, wenn es Ihnen wichtig ist British oder American zu klingen.

Staycation

Dank Corona wird 2020 wohl als Jahr der Staycation (= Urlaub zu Hause) in die Geschichte eingehen. :-)
